This private reserve is located at the south east of Loja city, at an elevation between 2200 to 3300 m a.s.l. Its proximity to the Amazon region makes it a place with abundant rainfall and strong winds almost all year round. Additionally, it is a buffer zone of Podocarpus National Park, which means that it exhibit an incredible biodiversity and high species endemicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure feeds on.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, there are three endemic <em>Stenocercus <\/em>species inhabiting this place. Two species, <em>S. ornatus<\/em> and <em>S. festae<\/em>, are found in the same microhabitat, which made sampling a bit tricky at the beginning. However, later on I was able to clearly distinguish between them by considering two main physical features: (1) <em>S. ornatus<\/em>, both adult male and female lizards are bigger in size than <em>S. festae<\/em>; (2) Adult males and females of <em>S. ornatus<\/em> have a white or greenish moustachial stripe, while in <em>S. festae<\/em>individuals, this stripe is indistinct or that a cloud of smoke was coming out of the mountain next to the one in the reserve. We immediately called emergency services because that day in particular was hot and sunny, and we were afraid that the fire would quickly get out of control. Credits: Marek Castel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, consistent drizzle overnight helped to contain the fire and firefighters arrived early the next morning to completely put out the fire. They confirmed that the fire was an intentional burn by a local farmer who wanted more land so his cattle could graze. Esta reserva privada est\u00e1 ubicada al sureste de la ciudad de Loja, entre 2200 y 3300 m.s.n.m. La cercan\u00eda con la regi\u00f3n amaz\u00f3nica lo convierte en un lugar con abundantes lluvias y fuertes vientos casi todo el a\u00f1o. Dos de ellas, <em>S. ornatus<\/em> y <em>S. festae<\/em>, se encuentran en el mismo microh\u00e1bitat, lo que dificult\u00f3 un poco el muestreo al inicio. Inmediatamente llamamos a los servicios de emergencia porque ese d\u00eda en particular era caluroso y soleado, y tem\u00edamos que el fuego se salga de control r\u00e1pidamente. Ellos confirmaron que el fuego fue una quema intencional de un granjero local que quer\u00eda m\u00e1s tierra para que su ganado pudiera pastar.
